About us

Ergonomics Consultants

Established in 2013 and based in Johannesburg, ErgoFocus (Pty) Ltd. aims to assist companies with our ergonomic services in a practical, easy to understand, and solution driven manner.

Quantifying ergonomic stressors results in the successful application of ergonomics to industrial and office environments and also to equipment, machinery and tools.

Applying ergonomic principles will benefit the company, as employees can improve their efficiencies and comforts, thus making fewer errors, and improve safety. A higher productivity combined with a reduced employee downtime usually results in an excellent return on investment.

Ergonomics Consultants in South Africa

Esmeralda has the unique combination of a Human Kinetics Engineering Degree, which combines traditional engineering with insight into the human body, and 10+ years experience in dealing with ergonomics in Africa and Europe. This allows her to not only offer her clients ergonomic skills, but be able to combine it with practical engineered solutions, especially in industrial environments. 

After finishing her B.Eng. degree in Human Kinetic Technology in the Netherlands, Esmeralda worked for approximately 2 years as an occupational health and safety consultant in Leiden. Here she was trained in occupational health and safety legislation and in the practical implementation thereof. Being exposed to all aspects within her consultancy work, Esmeralda soon discovered that her passion was in ergonomic related issues.

After immigrating to South Africa, she gained invaluable experience in various industries regarding the subject as an ergonomics consultant, trainer and manager. Her combination of education and relevant experience in ergonomics has enabled her to be accredited by the professional affairs board of ESSA as a CPE (certified professional ergonomist).  Her aim is to further promote ergonomics and its benefits in South Africa, and to the rest of Africa.

A B.Eng. in Human Kinetic Technology has the unique ability, to know as much between the differences in grease and bearings, as between the differences in joints & synovial fluid.

Wellness Days

Ergonomic Wellness Days in JohannesburgAs ergonomics focuses on the well-being of employees, erggonomics wellness days serve as a great platform to incorporate ergonomics. ErgoFocus can tailor various ergonomic programs to include in your company’s wellness days that can consist of a combination of the following options:

 

 

 

 

 

- At the Ergonomics' stand an ‘in-house representative office workstation’ is provided where employees can have a one-on-one session with a consultant regarding their posture and work habits, and are also shown how various simple solutions/ ergonomic aids can reduce their discomforts.

 

- Various presentations can be organised (minimum 60mins) regarding:

  • Office ergonomics
  • Back care and healthy working postures
  • Manual material handling
  • Slips trips & falls
  • Driver ergonomics
  • Fatigue Management

- In consultation with the client, pictures/videos of employees and their ‘habits’ can be taken beforehand and incorporated in these presentations which makes them very interactive. Also on-site training can be provided.

- Employees can book the consultant, who will actually provide a one-on-one session with the employee, and discuss how their discomforts regarding their current workstation can be alleviated.

- In addition the consultant can use the results gathered on a wellness day as a ‘pilot-study’ to provide the company with a general indication of their current ‘ergonomic status’.

Fatigue is a state of declining alertness which eventually ends in sleep. Work-Related Fatigue can occur in situations where concentration for extended periods during work hours is needed, or by performing strenuous physical work, such as:

  • working in awkward working postures
  • working in temperature extremes
  • working in noisy environments
  • being exposed to vibration
  • being exposed to extended (night) shift work

Fatigue management in South AfricaIn South Africa, life factors (non work-related) also play a role, such as long commuting times, bad nutrition, impaired health, alcohol & drug abuse, and living conditions that do not promote a good rest between shifts. Fatigue management in South Africa & in the working environment, can effectively be managed through appropriate fatigue assessments implemented by ErgoFocus. 

Fatigued workers do not perform well, are less productive, and are more likely to have accidents and injuries. Fatigue affects the ability to think clearly. As a result, people who are fatigued are not good at recognising their own level of impairment, and can be unaware that they are not functioning at their best.

Shift work is particularly hazardous, as often you are required to drive at night, at a time when your body is programmed to be asleep. Shift workers are six times more likely to be involved in a fatigue-related road accident than any other workers. Fatigued workers can be a significant hazard.

Fatigue inhibits normal function, thus reducing productivity, reducing an employee’s health and most importantly, COMPROMISING SAFETY!
